Sam Hafertepe Jr. – “Fall Brawler” Wins His 18th of the Season!

(Bill W) October 3, 2017 – Sam Hafertepe Jr. and the Keith Dobbs #15H team grabbed their 18th win of the season and his 15th with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series Saturday night at I-80 Speedway’s “Fall Brawl” near Greenwood, Nebraska. The win paid the Sunnyvale, Texas native $5,000. The team heads with ASCS for a two-night event this weekend at El Paso County Raceway near Calhan, Colorado.

Sam drew a starting spot in the heat inside row four Saturday. “We didn’t draw so well, and we had a tough heat,” he says. “The track was in really good shape. We had (Terry) McCarl, (Dusty) Zomer, Matt Juhl and some others in there. That made it more difficult, but we were able to get through there. It took a few laps to get dialed in, and once we were in the top three or four, we manipulated our way to second.”

A two-heat format was used, and he started fourth in the second. “It was a little tougher to get around guys in the second heat,” says Sam. “Once we fell into third, we ran down the guy for second. We passed him with about a lap to go and ended up second in that one too.”

The two heats took their toll on the 4/10-mile oval, and being the top point driver, Sam was ready on the pole. “They graded the top of the track and kind of took the cushion away,” he says. “I think they were trying to keep the track from laying rubber, but it ended up laying rubber pretty quickly. We still went to the top early. We took advantage of that and got away from Tim Kaeding early on.”

The rubber set in on the track, and Sam was in position to win. “It was down pretty good about six or seven laps in,” he says. “We had to basically manage our tires and keep them underneath us for several laps. Once we got the lead, I tried to keep the car underneath me and straight for 30 laps. That’s tough at a fast place like that. We were happy to hang on and get that win.”

It will be his first trip to Calhan this weekend. “We’ll be ready to go,” says Sam. “This is a new track for us. I’ve watched some videos. We’re trying to talk to some of the Outlaw guys that were there last year. We want to see what we can learn about that.”
