Sam Hafertepe Jr. Recovers From Disastrous Friday for 7th at Tulare Thunderbowl

Sunnyvale, Texas-The Plumbfast Racing Team and Sam Hafertepe Jr headed to the Tulare Thunderbowl with high hopes following a strong run at Las Vegas. Unfortunately a disastrous Friday night threatened to turn the week sour but Sam and the team persevered and were rewarded with a strong 7th place run on Saturday night.

Sam was 5th fastest in warm-ups but bicycled hard on his first qualifying lap in turns 1 and 2. The second lap would be much worse. As Sam exited turn 2 the rear axle of the Lone Star Speedway #15H broke and sent Sam spinning before he ultimately tipped over lightly on the exit of turn 2.

“I’ve never felt anything like that before,” said Sam following the crash. “At first I thought maybe a torsion stop broke. I’m just glad it didn’t happen when we entered a corner.”

The team along with several helping hands thrashed to put a new rear end in the car and was able to make it out for the heat race. Unfortunately the car wasn’t right and Sam struggled in the 6th position. Hafertepe had one last shot at making the transfer on a restart but couldn’t quite get the job done as the car again bicycled hard in turn 1.

“We changed motors after Vegas and this one just isn’t right,” explained Sam. “We are leaking oil all over the place and it seems to be misfiring.”

The team decided to change motors following the heat race and thrashed to get ready for the B Main. Sam had to start deep in the field but caught a break when an opening lap crash took out several competitors.

Hafertepe restarted in 5th and soon moved into 4th. One lap later however Sam would slip back to 5th as he struggled with the mishandling race car. Sam would catch another break however as the 4th place running car crashed hard in turn 1. Hafertepe would hold off Toni Lutar and Zach Zimmerly without much trouble over the final few laps to safely transfer into the A Feature event.

Sam rolled out for the A Feature in the last row and survived the initial start and moved forward slightly during the first couple of laps before a restart for Steve Kinser. On the restart disaster struck as Terry McCarl spun down the front stretch in front of the field. Hafertepe had nowhere to go and flipped wildly down the front straightaway towards turn 1.

“We really didn’t need that tonight,” explained Sam following the crash. “We knew a lot of cars would get torn up on this track and we weren’t really good so we were just going to try to make laps and take what we could get. Unfortunately we bent this frame and we’ll have to get our back-up car down and see if we can’t bounce back tomorrow night.”

Sam was once again fast in warm-ups as he set the 3rd fastest lap but again struggled in qualifying as he turned a lap that was only good enough for 17th quick.

“I’m not sure why we are so far off,” said Sam following qualifying. “We keep on being really quick in warm-ups but it’s not transferring to time trials. We are going to really throw the kitchen sink at the car though for the rest of the night because there is no way we are going to work as hard as we have this weekend and not get some sort of positive result.”

Sam lined up 6th in a tough heat and was able to get the jump on fellow row 3 starter Danny Lasoski to exit turn 2 in 5th. Hafertepe would try to reel in Donny Schatz for the rest of the heat while he steadily pulled away from the battle for 6th.

Sam and the team once again made several changes for the feature and hoped to continue moving in a positive direction for the feature.

Following some opening lap carnage Sam settled into the 11th position. Hafertepe hunted for a line early trying high and low at both ends of the speedway. On lap 7 Sam switched to the high line only to have a hard charging Steve Kinser drive by on the bottom. Sam held on to the 12th position which he held until a yellow moved him up to 10th.

Hafertepe went to the top side of the speedway only to have Daryn Pittman drive underneath of him. Sam turned back under Pittman and blasted past him down the back straightaway. At this point in the feature Sam settled in on the bottom and began to get faster and faster. Sam soon began to reel in Tommy Tarlton and following a lap 14 restart he was able to move past him on the low side exiting turn 4 to take over 8th.

The second half of the race went non-stop and Sam began once again moving around the track and hunting for a faster line. Towards the last 10 laps Sam began to move in on the 5th-6th and 7th place battle between Jason Sides, Paul McMahan and Steve Kinser.

The foursome battled through traffic and Sam began working both the high and low lines to try to make something happen. Hafertepe had several runs on Kinser but couldn’t quite make the pass. Eventually however Kinser was able to sneak by McMahan and Sam turned his attention to trying to find a way past Paul.

An opportunity finally presented itself with 2 laps to go and Sam was able to capitalize as he drove underneath McMahan in turns 1 and 2. Hafetepe then moved in on Kinser and on the white flag lap he moved inside of Steve in turns 1 and 2. The duo was even exiting turn 2 but Kinser was able to box Sam in behind a lapped car and Sam settled for 7th, his best World of Outlaws finish this season.

“We’re definitely satisfied with 7th,” said Sam following the feature event. “We had to deal with so many problems and to work through them all, not let them get us down and ultimately come home with a top 10 finish says a lot about our team. Mike (Schure) and Daryl (Turford) worked their butts off this week and I’m glad we came through like we did. Friday night is the kind of night that really tests your team. It’s so easy to want to give up after a night like that and you question why you’re even doing what you are doing but then to come back like we did makes it all worth it.”

The team has now headed back home to Texas where they will build a new car and prepare for Sam’s homecoming race at Lone Star Speedway which is owned and promoted by Sam’s father.

“We ran 2nd at Lone Star last year and it was definitely one of the highlights of the season and I’m hoping we can move up 1 spot on the podium this year,” said Sam. “We are going to throw everything at it and hopefully things fall our way.”

Sunnyvale, Texas-It appears as though a trip to Las Vegas was all Sam Hafertepe Jr and The Plumbfast Racing Team needed to change their luck this season. The team was able to re-group following 2 disappointing races in Florida that saw the Lone Star Speedway #15H drop out while running in the top 10 and score an impressive 8th place finish with The World of Outlaws (WoO) at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this past Friday night.

The evening started off with Sam drawing the 57 pill and as a result he would be the second last car to take a time. Sam laid down a lap that was good enough for 11th quick and put him on the pole for his heat.

“We were certainly glad to make the invert again but we need to be just a little bit better in time trials,” explained the Sunnyvale, Texas racer. “We are making the inversions but not timing in up front and we need to start doing that. Today was particularly tough though because the field was so close, we were 11th but we were only like a 1/10th off quick time.”

The heat race was a showdown between two of sprint car racing’s most exciting drivers as Sam and Tim Kaeding had a drag race down the front straightaway to start the heat. Sam was able to pull slightly away and slide across in front of Kaeding heading into turn 1. Hafertepe attacked the cushion and drove away to his 3rd WoO heat race win of the season to stay unbeaten in WoO heats in 2010.

“It was really important to get into the lead,” said Sam. “It was slick right up to curb on the cushion so it was hard to pass. We were able to get out front, get up on the curb and set sail. We need to be better though because the car is just too tight on the curb but when I enter below the curb we are too free.”

Sam lined up for the Dash in the 9th position. Hafertepe dropped back to 10th on the start but was able to power his past Chad Kemenah on the cushion and back into 9th where he would stay the rest of the way.

“We are still missing something,” said Sam following the Dash. “We are having the same problem we had in the heat and it’s holding us up just a little bit. We can stay with the cars in front of us but we’ve got to get a lot better if we’re going to pass them.”

Hafertepe held his position through the early laps of the feature as he rode around the curb. Craig Dollansky pressured Sam several times and finally on lap 9 Dollansky was able to pass Sam and drop Sam back to 10th.

Sam was able to work his way past Terry McCarl a couple of laps later and held the 9th position as he tried to track down a fading Fred Rahmer. On lap 18 Hafertepe was able to dispose of Rahmer and set his sight on Brad Sweet.

During the closing laps Hafertepe was able to close down on Sweet as Brad dealt with lapped traffic. The pair had some anxious moments including a 3 wide pass of a lapped car but Sweet was able to get through traffic cleanly.

Hafertepe then had to deal with Chad Kemenah before Lucas Wolfe made a late race charge and nearly passed Sam in turn 4 with 2 laps to go when Hafertepe got bottled up behind a slower car. Fortunately Sam was able to clear the car and pull away over the final 2 laps to score his first top 10 of the season with The WoO.

“We’ll definitely take it,” said Sam. “We were not quite as fast as we were in Florida or as fast as we wanted to be tonight but after dropping out of the first 2 races of the season it was really important to get on track here and get a solid finish to help us make up some points. I think we may have gone too hard with our tire selection and I know most of the guys did go softer than us but we kind of needed to be conservative and make sure we finished the race. I also think we may have made the wrong decision on the left rear shock that we ended up running but we’ll get it all sorted out and hopefully have a great weekend in Tulare. Mike (Schure) and Daryl (Turford) are working really well together and I don’t think it will be too long before you see us get that elusive first win if we keep performing like we have.”

The Plumbfast Racing Team is now headed to The Tulare Thunderbowl Speedway for events this Friday and Saturday. Following the California weekend Hafertepe and the rest of The WoO will be headed to Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas where Sam will try to get a win in front of his hometown fans at his family owned speedway.

Sam Hafertepe Jr. Impressive Florida Performance

2/10/2010

Sunnyvale, Texas-Sam Hafertepe Jr and The Plumbfast Racing Team turned in an impressive performance this past week that resulted in 2 top 10 finishes during the always difficult season opening races in Florida. Unfortunately despite being a top 10 car on all five nights of racing action the team would only see the chequered flag twice which took away from what had been a very impressive performance by the Sunnyvale, Texas native.

The year started out at Ocala Speedway with The All Star Circuit of Champions. Sam ran 3rd in his heat but unfortunately and opening lap skirmish between Greg Hodnett and Danny Lasoski resulted in nowhere for Sam to go and as a result he left the track on a tow truck.

“It was just one of those first lap deals,” explained Sam. “Some guys got together on the bottom and I was already committed down there. These things happen on starts and eventually everyone gets bit. Fortunately we only really lost an axle and some shocks.”

The second night at Ocala was rained out and the team headed to Volusia Speedway in Barberville, Florida for 2 more nights of racing with The All Stars capped off by 3 nights with The World of Outlaws.

The opening night with at Volusia saw Sam run a solid 2nd to Terry McCarl in his heat to safely lock him in for the feature event in the 17th starting position.

Sam was a bullet all feature long and despite the lockdown, tacky surface that made passing difficult he was able to work is way through the field before ultimately passing Cale Conley on the final lap to secure a 10th place finish.

“I was really pleased with the results from the opening race at Volusia,” said Sam. “I told the guys that what had me so pumped up was that the car wasn’t really that good. I told Mike (Schure) and Daryl (Turford) that the 10th place run was going to be the worst we’d run all week because I knew how much better the car could be.”

The following night saw Sam time in with an impressive 6th place performance. Under All Star rules the top 6 qualifiers re-draw for their starting positions so transferring from your heat was of utmost importance if you planned on winning the feature event.

Sam was able to get a great start in his heat as he found the bottom and drove past both Brad Sweet and Kraig Kinser. Hafertepe switched to the top and lost 3rd to Joey Saldana but finished out the heat in 4th to lock him into the feature.

By luck of the draw Sam found himself starting 3rd in the feature but at the drop of the green it was clear he did not have a car to win as he was dropped to 6th on the start. Sam would drop as low as 7th in the field but through attrition and a slide job battle with Danny Lasoski that he eventually won he would work his way back up to 5th. As the feature wore on Sam ran comfortably in 5th, never pressuring those in front of him but never feeling pressure from behind him either.

“To be honest our car really wasn’t that good tonight either,” stated Sam following the feature. “We were definitely better on long runs than short runs and once we got strung out I could hold my own but I hated all of the cautions we had because they gave everyone a shot at us when we really weren’t that good. Fortunately there was a curb on the top and that’s generally when I excel as a driver.”

The World of Outlaws season opener was lost to rain meaning that the first of the remaining 2 Outlaw races would be run on Saturday and Sunday.

Sam would catch a lucky break and be the 16th fastest qualifier on Saturday night which put him on the pole of a very tough heat. Fortunately Sam got the jump and while Steve Kinser and Tim Kaeding fought a war for 2nd place Hafertepe drove away to a comfortable victory.

Sam started the dash in 10th and on the start engaged in a torrid battle with Jason Sides and Joey Saldana that saw the trio race side by side on two separate occasions before Sam ultimately ran 10th.

The season opening feature saw Sam move forward steadily as he was able to pass Fred Rahmer and held the 9th spot while pressuring Jason Sides and Kraig Kinser for the 7th and 8th positions.

The first two-wide restart in the history of the series saw Sam take advantage of the situation and blast from 9th up to 7th and soon Sam was pressuring Kinser again but this time for the 7th position. The pass for 6th seemed inevitable as Sam was clearly a top 5 car but unfortunately disaster struck on lap 17 when Sam blew the motor on his Lone Star Speedway #15H which resulted in a disappointing 21st place finish.

“We finally had a really good car here,” said the disappointed driver following the feature. “I just can’t believe that happened. It’s really devastating. Our goal was to come out of Florida with 2 top-10 World of Outlaws finishes and we were well on our way to achieving that goal when that happened. I’m sure we had enough of a car and enough time to get Kraig and work our way into the top 5.”

The following day the crew changed motors and Sam went out and set the 14th fastest time in qualifications which put Sam on the pole for his heat which he dominated thoroughly. The heat race was eventful however as drivers who weren’t in transfer positions stopped on the track on 2 separate occasions to deliberately bring out yellow flags and take advantage of the double-file restart rule.

“That was a bit of a joke,” said Sam following the heat race. “We were winning the heat by a straightaway and clearly had the car to win but other guys we’re trying to make up for their inability to get the job done by bringing out deliberate yellow flags. If we’d have gotten screwed on that I’d have been livid.”

Sam continued to be lightening fast as he drove by not only Donny Schatz and Jason Sides in the Dash to move from 7th to 5th.

Unfortunately Sam decided to make several changes to the car and the team wasn’t able to make them all before The World of Outlaws officials blew the horn and Sam was docked 2 starting positions.

“That was ridiculous,” said Sam following the race. “They rushed us along the night before and said they wouldn’t do that to us again the following night. Instead they were worse. Heck, they even blew the horn for the dash before I could get back from the interview they had me do on the front stretch. If I had wanted any changes on the car we’d have been screwed. I know they were trying to rush the show along for the fans but they were getting ridiculous. We made a ton of changes for the feature, every single one was necessary and there was no way we were going to get them all done in the time they gave us.”

During the opening laps of the feature Sam took his Maxim chassis to the topside of the speedway while most of the field preferred the bottom lane. Hafertepe’s car was locked down and fast on the top and he soon began moving forward through the field. Hafertepe disposed of Mark Smith and Paul McMahan early in the race to settle into the 6th position.

Sam soon began to utilize the top to reel in 4-time defending World of Outlaws Champion Donny Schatz. Hafertepe gained ground early on Schatz but as the run went on could only maintain the gap up until a lap 14 caution.

The double-file restart would not be kind to Sam as he immediately dropped from 7th to 10th. As the race went on however Sam closed back in on some of the cars that passed him until disaster struck on lap 22. Hafertepe was entering turn 1 when his left rear tire exploded dramatically. The tire actually came into the cage during the explosion and hit Sam in both the arm and the leg viciously. During the course of the blow out a part of the tire also blew forward and smashed the fitting for the front brake resulting in a total loss of brakes. Schure and Turford were able to change the tire on time but the lack of brakes ended Sam’s night.

“We almost trashed the car going into turn 1,” recalled Hafertepe. “We either cut the tire or we blistered it. I’m pretty sure we blistered it though because as the run went on I could feel it getting worse and worse. The car started vibrating and my guys told me that we were smoking the tire for the last few laps and it looked like it was going down. It kind of confuses me because earlier in the week when everyone else was blowing tires we were getting great wear, now, no one else is struggling and we are the ones not getting great tire wear. It’s just really frustrating because this is two straight nights that we’ve had a very good car and have been running in the top 10 when we dropped out. We had great All Star races but we really needed to come out of the Outlaw races with good finishes if we wanted to run as good as we think we could in points.”

Despite the final two disappointing races the driver of The Plumbfast Racing, Lone Star Speedway #15H has high hopes heading into the rest of the season.

“Everybody knows we were here,” said Sam. “We were a top 10 car every night and one of the 5 fastest Outlaws all week. Mike and Daryl worked great together and I think we’ve got ourselves a very good team. If we keep running like this we are eventually going to get rewarded and hopefully when we head to Las Vegas in a couple of weeks we will put it all together.”

Sam Hafertepe Jr. Reflects on Breakthrough Season, Returning to WoO in 2010

Daryl Turford

Sunnyvale, Texas-The 2009 season was a tremendous year for Sam Hafertepe Jr. and The Plumbfast Racing Team. This past weekend Sam earned finishes of 7th and 9th at USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona to cap off the sprint car racing season. The top 10 finishes capped off a long year that saw Sam begin the year on the World of Outlaws (WoO) tour until the team decided to run a true “Outlaw” schedule in July.

Sam and the crew came into the season more prepared than ever before. The team had prepared four motors and had several cars in their stable. Despite all of the preparation Sam’s season got off to a disastrous start as the team lost three motors during the Florida Speedweeks.

“Florida was absolutely devastating for our team,” recalled Sam from his Sunnyvale, Texas shop. “It truly took our team almost all of the season to recover from Florida. We came in really and truly believing that we could win a show and that we would be up front all week. To have things go like they did was just a nightmare both emotionally and financially. You know there are going to be some difficult times out here, but to be down to one motor less than two weeks into the season was something we really didn’t see coming.”

The team would struggle through the early part of the year at which time Sam and the entire team decided some major changes needed to be made. The team switched to Charlie Fisher Racing Engines and decided to try a Maxim chassis. The changes the team made paid off immediately.

“The first time we had the combination together we showed up at Eldora and blew ‘em away in our heat,” remembered Sam fondly. “We needed a run like that pretty bad and we were really looking forward to the dash and feature but, unfortunately the show would rain out. They got the show in the next night though and we had a pretty competitive car, but faded late to 11th.”

The team headed to Williams Grove knowing they would have to be “on kill” for the famed “Pennsylvannia Posse.” While many of the World of Outlaws regulars struggled Sam thrived throughout the evening as he was the only Outlaw to qualify for the Dash and was headed to an impressive 4th place run when a flat tire and a sputtering motor caused Sam to fade to 12th at the finish.

“Those two races were really the turning point of our season,” explained Sam. “We didn’t get the results we wanted and we finally had a sense that we were going in the right direction.”

A couple of weeks later Sam found himself in the thick of a battle for the feature win at Virginia Motor Speedway. Hafertepe started on the front row of the feature with Joey Saldana and the two racers waged war throughout the race as Sam chased his first career victory.

“I ran as hard as I could that night,” recalled Sam. “I was on the edge all of the way through and took some pretty wild chances in traffic but we came up just a bit short and had to settle for 2nd.”

Hafertepe would get on a roll and just two races later he would earn the Hard Charger Award at Attica Raceway Park as he tore from the 21st starting position to a 5th place finish in the A feature.

“That was an incredibly rewarding night,” remembered Sam fondly. “We couldn’t get the car right. We changed bars and shocks after every session and barely squeaked our way into the A Main. Finally for the A Main we got the car right and it was a rocket. I was running a different line than most of the guys out there and we were able to get through most of the field. To chase the car that hard all night and then eventually run that good was very, very satisfying.”

The team followed up the performance with a 7th place finish at I-96 Speedway in Michigan and things seemed to be headed in the right direction for the team.

“Unfortunately at this point we still hadn’t settled completely on the Maxim and we still only had one Fisher motor,” explained Sam. “We kept switching cars and sometimes ran both chassis in the same weekend and it was getting hard to have any kind of consistency.”

The team did however have a stellar TV performance when the WoO hit Dodge City. “We went out there with a very tired motor, but the car was perfect. I nailed the lap and I earned my first career fast time award. Things really started to roll from there.”

Hafertepe would chase Joey Saldana and Donny Schatz throughout the A Feature event on his way to an impressive 3rd place finish in front of the SpeedTV cameras.

The team would continue to have flashes of speed, but it wasn’t until July that Sam really started to succeed.

“Honestly, even at this point we still hadn’t fully recovered from losing those motors at the
start of the year,” explained Sam. “We were able to get a lot more stable in terms of our chassis, but it always seemed like we were running on a tired motor. You always hear about how Outlaw teams are switching out motors after 5 or 6 nights, well for a while there we really had to lean on the one and only Fisher motor that we had and actually put 19 nights on it before freshening it.”

Hafertepe and the team headed into July and The Brad Doty Classic at Limaland Motorsports Park feeling pretty confident.

“The car was a rocket all night,” explained Sam. “We timed great, we were a bullet in the heat and we ran 2nd in the Dash to put us on the front row of the feature. All week long my guys (Kory Miller and Daryl Turford) and I had been saying we wanted this race. We’re a very young team out here but we’re all aware of who Brad was and the impact he has had on the sport.”

Sam burst into the lead and led nearly half of the race in what probably would be considered by most insiders as the most exciting flag-to-flag WoO feature of the season. Jason Meyers snuck past Sam just past halfway after the pair had exchanged slide jobs all race long.

Hafertepe along with 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser began to track Meyers back down in traffic but just when things were getting interesting again Sam slapped the wall down the backstretch and the car went into a vicious series of snap rolls which ended Sam’s night and destroyed the frame.

“We trashed a car and lost a race we had a great shot to win,” recalled Sam. “The funny thing is none of us were mad or upset. I think that was a big moment of growth for our team. I think a lot of teams out here would have pouted or gotten angry at their driver or the situation, but my guys knew that I was hanging it all out there and I think we all agreed it was worth risking a race car to try to win ‘The Doty.’”

The team spent the rest of the week getting ready for the prestigious Kings Royal. The $50,000 to win race brought some stout competition from all over. Once the field had been whittled down to it’s final 24 starters Sam felt he was in the position to win the race.

“I had told Daryl earlier that night that no one was going to beat Schatz based on the way the surface was and where he was starting,” recalled Sam. “Soon, I started getting ideas about how we could make the car roll better and by the time we rolled out for the feature I thought Schatz was beatable and I was pretty sure I was the guy who could do it.”

Hafertepe methodically picked his way from 5th to 3rd in the opening laps while Schatz and Dale Blaney battled for the lead. Sam forced his way into the consciousness of sprint car fans everywhere on lap 18 when he passed Blaney for 2nd and immediately set his sights on Schatz for the lead.

“Our car was so good,” beamed Sam. “I could drive it wherever I wanted and it seemed like we couldn’t do anything wrong.”

Hafertepe worked his way onto Schatz’s bumper on lap 23 but a yellow would dramatically alter the race.

“During the yellow our car began to sputter,” recalled Sam. “I’m still not sure why we were using so much fuel, but we were in trouble. When Schatz took off on the restart the car just didn’t feel quite as good and the sputtering motor killed our chances of pulling off the upset. From there on out I just tried to be as smooth as I could and take what I could get.”

Hafertepe would find himself struggling in the closing laps as Blaney snuck by for 2nd on lap 36 but Sam would catch a break in the form of a fuel stop.

“We needed that really badly,” explained Sam. “We couldn’t have made the finish otherwise and it let me go after the leaders again.”

Unfortunately the track had taken rubber at that point and passing was at a premium. Sam would cover the final 4 laps and earn a 4th place finish.

“To run like that at The Doty and The Kings Royal showed us and everybody else that we can beat anybody, anytime, anywhere,” stated Sam. “I firmly believe that from that point on we were a much tougher team and I think the results showed that in the 2nd half of the season.”

Following The Kings Royal the team found themselves at a crossroads.

“Fusion Energy Boost had paid us very well for their time in 2008, but we hadn’t seen a dime in 2009,” explained Sam. “It was midseason, we’d run their graphics all year and we still hadn’t seen a penny. I’m not sure if Fusion didn’t pay the Outlaws or if the Outlaws just didn’t pay us. The Outlaws swear up and down that they haven’t been paid, but the only thing I know for sure is that we didn’t get paid. We decided earlier in the year that if it got to July and we hadn’t been paid that the graphics would be taken off the car and we would race where we want. Unfortunately it came to that.”

The team decided to follow a true “Outlaw” schedule that saw them compete whenever they could throughout the Midwest.

It didn’t take long for Sam to find victory lane as the 2007 Knoxville Nationals Rookie of the Year set a new track record with the Interstate Racing Association at Eagle Valley Raceway in Wisconsin before taking the lead on lap 12 of the main event and running away with the win.

“That was a pretty cool night for us,” recalled Sam. “Kory and Daryl had won races on crews before, but never while working on a 410 and we had never all won together as a team. I think it was also Daryl’s 100th race as a crew member for me and I know it meant a lot to him to win that night.”

From Eagle Valley the team headed out for The Thunder Through The Plains Tour which was highlighted by two top-5’s to round out the tour including a 2nd in the $10,000 to win finale at Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota.

Following Huset’s, The Plumbfast Racing Team decided to compete in both the 360 and 410 Nationals and they got things off on the right foot by finishing 4th on their preliminary night at the 360 Nationals.

“We were in a pretty tough field on our preliminary night,” recalled Sam. “A lot of good cars went home but, we were on top of things and came out with the 8th best point total.”

Sam would charge from 8th to 4th in the Saturday night A Main. During the closing stages Sam appeared to have a car capable of running 2nd or 3rd but a blown tire that exploded dramatically over the turn 3 fence ended the night prematurely and forced Sam to limp to a 17th place finish.

The team headed into The 49th Annual Knoxville Nationals confident following the success they’d had with the 360 at Knoxville the week before. Hafertepe timed in 12th overall on his preliminary night but more importantly was the fastest car who was able to transfer out of his heat which made him high point man at that point. Sam would line up 8th for the preliminary night feature and needed only a solid finish to lock him into his first career Knoxville Nationals A Feature.

On the initial start Sam vaulted from 8th to 3rd and looked like he might win the feature but a crash in turn 4 by a slower car necessitated a complete restart. Hafertepe wouldn’t get quite as good of a start the 2nd time around but gradually picked his way up to 3rd by the time the feature race was over.

“We were ecstatic with our performance,” beamed Sam. “Donny Schatz was the only car on our night to collect more points than us and following a 2nd place run in the A Scramble I found myself lining up for the Knoxville Nationals in 8th with a car that I TRULY believed could win. You can’t ask for any more than that as a driver.”

Contact with the front straightaway wall on lap 2 would ultimately kill any chance Sam would have to win the most prestigious race in sprint car racing, but The Plumbfast Racing Team was still proud of their performance.

“I think we had one of the fastest cars all week,” stated Sam. “We were one of the best on our qualifying night, we finished 2nd in the scramble, we were the 3rd fastest in the warm-up session for The Nationals but we just missed the setup in the A Feature and getting into the wall killed us. We learned so much and I think we gained a ton of valuable experience and I can’t wait to go back there next year.”

Following Knoxville Hafertepe and The Plumbfast Racing Team heated up as they barnstormed anywhere that was paying decent money. From mid-August into early September the team reeled off 3 top 5’s in 6 races. The highlight was a 2nd place finish at Attica Raceway Park where Sam chased Stevie Smith throughout.

“Stevie Smith had such a great year, but we were really hoping to beat him,” said Sam. “I threw everything I had at him all night and he was able to hold me off every time. I think the fans really enjoyed that one and we always seem to put on a show whenever we hit Attica.”

Throughout the final portion of the season Sam was fast no matter who he competed against as he closed out the year with 9 top-10 finishes in 11 starts. Unquestionably the highlight was Sam’s run in front of his hometown crowd at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas. During the offseason Sam’s family had purchased the facility which had sat dormant for 4 years. Together they refurbished the speedway and restored it into one of the finest facilities on the tour.

Sam and The Plumbfast Racing Team turned in an incredible performance at The First Annual Lone Star Speedway WoOFest as he matched his career best WoO finish with a 2nd.

“That night was amazing,” remembered Sam fondly. “It rained several inches on the Wednesday so I had to leave the car to my guys to have ready so I could work on the track. I got my job done and my guys stepped up to the plate too. We had so many more distractions than anyone in that field and right up until it was race time I was the guy driving the water truck and making the finishing touches on the surface. I still can’t believe things went so smoothly.”

Joey Saldana and Sam shared the front row again and following a wild first lap that saw the pair exchange slide jobs Saldana was able to emerge with the lead. Hafertepe chased after Saldana desperately but just as he was appearing to make up ground in traffic a caution came out.

“The yellow killed us,” said Sam. “Joey was a rocket in open track and we could stay with him but we couldn’t even think about passing him in open track.”

Sam would cross the line in 2nd where he was welcomed by several friends and family members.

Sam spent much of his time behind the wheel of his family owned Plumbfast Racing sprint car but towards the end of the year he was given an opportunity to drive for the Pennsylvania based Pancho’s Racing Products Team for the World Finals in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“It was an honour to be asked by Pancho and Tab to drive their race car,” beamed Sam. “It was also nice to get back on a J&J for a bit, because we’ve always had a good relationship with Jack Elam and I do believe in his race cars.”

The team ultimately needed just a little bit longer to gel but The World Finals format quashed any chances the team had to succeed when they were not immediately fast out of the box on Thursday night.

“Everyone made their time trial runs on Thursday and we were about one warm-up session from being where we needed to be,” said Sam. “We were a little off on the motor, the car setup and gear. Once we got things dialled in we were really, really fast but we’d buried ourselves too much at that point.”

The team would start deep both nights but despite having a very fast race car they would not qualify for either feature.

“I felt bad for the guys,” said Sam. “Every time that car hit that track it had the best stuff on it, new tires, everything. The Pancho’s guys put it all out there for me but we just came up a bit short both nights.”

Following Lowe’s Sam would again hop behind the wheel of a 360 with a new-style J&J chassis to finish out the year. Hafertepe was a top 5 car almost every single time the car hit the track, but never could quite threaten to win another race before the year finished up in Arizona. Hafertepe closed out the year with 4 top-10 finishes in 4 360 starts against the best ASCS racers in the country.

“I was really pleased with the new J&J’s that Jack sent us,” said Sam. “We know our Maxim’s run and we are pretty sure these J&J’s will run so we’re kind of up in the air in terms of what we want to do for a chassis in 2010.”

The team is now back in Sunnyvale, Texas preparing for the 2010 season.

“We’ve decided we are going to make a full assault once again on The World of Outlaws tour for 2010,” said Sam. “There is just really nothing like racing those guys night in and night out. You have to be so focused as a driver and so prepared as a team. Sometimes the leadership really ticks me off and I hate that we can’t race where we want when we’re off, but at the end of the day these guys are the most professional organization and they have the best drivers in the world. I’m really looking forward to getting back out there and showing everyone what we are capable of in 2010.”

Sam Hafertepe Jr. And Pancho’s Racing Products Can’t Recover From Slow Star at World Finals

Daryl Turford

Sunnyvale, Texas-Sam Hafertepe and the Pancho’s Racing Products team got off to a slow start this past weekend and were never able to recover from a pair of bad qualifying efforts at The World Finals at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sam sat in the car for the first time on Thursday night just before warm-ups. Following the 3 lap session Sam would turn in 2 very disappointing time trial runs that put him behind for the rest of the week as he timed in 33rd and 36th.

“We didn’t have much time and we weren’t able to get the car and the motor quite the way we wanted in time trials”, explained Sam. “We only needed like 1 more warm-up session but we knew going in that this deal would be tough with so few laps together. Pancho, Tab and Mike had the car very well prepared which did make it a lot easier though”.

Friday night saw Sam line up for the opening heat race in the 9th position. Sam didn’t get the start he wanted and needed at the drop of the green flag and was only able to improve his position 1 spot. The lightening fast surface did nothing to help Sam’s cause and after a successful slide job in turns 3 and 4 on Mark Smith Sam would have to settle for 7th.

“The car was really fast in the heat”, said Sam. “I went to go low on the start and didn’t expect anyone to be down there, unfortunately when I committed there the guy in front of me did too and it killed our momentum. We had one of the fastest cars in the heat races but starting where we did with the competition we had in front of us we just couldn’t quite get it done”.

Sam was buried in a stellar B Main but on the opening lap showed he meant business as he charged towards the front. Hafertepe started 13th and was up to 7th when another car broke in front of him. Sam went to grab the brakes only to find that he didn’t have any. Following some desperate measures Hafertepe recovered but was now running 10th. Hafertepe tried desperately to claw his way into the A Feature despite the lack of brakes and was able to pass quality cars including Mark Smith, Chad Layton and Jessica Zemken but he would come up short finishing 7th.

“Our car was awesome again in the B Main”, said Sam. “I believe 100% that if we’d have had brakes that we’d have made it through the B with absolutely no problems whatsoever. I have no doubt in my mind”.

The team was able to immediately identify and resolve the brake problem for Saturday night and The Pancho’s Racing Products team was locked and loaded.

Once again Sam would start in the 9th position but soon a questionable call would make things more difficult.

“On the initial start the leaders took off and I went straight to the bottom like I had the night before”, explained Sam. “The guys behind the leaders were asleep and I got a great run and exited turn 2 in a transfer spot. That’s when the race went yellow and they penalized me 1 row for jumping the start”.

The angry Sunnyvale, Texas native took his emotions out on the field on the next start when he made an identical start to work his way up to 8th. Sam then worked his way past Todd Kane and into 7th. 1 lap later Kane returned the favour with a slider in turns 1 and 2. Sam and Kane were battling with 2 laps remaining when Greg Hodnett blew a tire to move Sam into 7th on the restart.

The restart saw Sam waste little time in dispatching of Kane as he set his sights on Keith Baxter and the final transfer spot as he blasted under the white flag. Hafertepe closed the gap but could not get close enough to make an attempt for the transfer spot as he crossed the line in 6th.

“The Outlaws pretty much cost us a shot at transferring when they penalized us”, said the upset driver. “I asked them why they let the second start go when I did the same thing as I did in the first and they said there was a 10 foot difference in when I hit the throttle on the start. I got to see it on television later that night and it just confirmed what a bad call it was in my opinion”.

As a result of Sam’s weak qualifying effort he once again had to line up at the back of the pack on a less than stellar, tire eating track surface.

Hafertepe did what he could but could only get a few cars on the opening lap before he settled into line and couldn’t move forward for the rest of the race.

“The track conditions were terrible”, explained Sam. “We burned off an SC 15 right rear which is usually the tire we go to when the track is taking rubber in the feature. I hadn’t seen a track tear up tires like that all year”.

Despite the disappointing results Sam was quite pleased with his team’s efforts.

“Pancho, Tab and Mike had that car incredibly well prepared”, said Sam. “They gave me absolutely everything they could. I even told Pancho that we should go with used tires in the Saturday night B Main given where we were starting and he didn’t hesitate to throw new one’s on again. Every detail was taken care of to the best of their ability and I had absolutely no worries when I hopped into their car. I can’t thank those guys enough because they are the first team to ever take a chance on me and they did everything 100% and didn’t leave anything out there. I’m just sorry I couldn’t get them some better results”.

Sam will now once again return home and perform double duty at Cowtown Speedway this weekend. Following a stellar 2nd place run in his modified qualifier Sam will now line up 4th for an 100 lap feature on Thursday night. The following two days will see Sam compete in both his regular 360 sprint car as well as the modified.

“I’m looking forward to getting back home”, said Sam. “I have a blast running the modified and I’m going to try to do everything I can to lead all 100 laps. We’ve been kind of snake bitten in the 360 though and I can’t think of a better way to make up for that by earning our way into victory lane in front of my home town crowd”.

Sam Hafertepe Jr. And Pancho’s Racing Products Looking for Success in World Finals

Daryl Turford

Sunnyvale, Texas-It is becoming more and more common to find World of Outlaws calibre drivers teaming up with Pennsylvania based sprint car teams and this weekend at The World Finals in Charlotte, NC the trend will continue as Sam Hafertepe Jr and The Pancho’s Racing Products team have formed an alliance that they hope will take them to victory lane.

“When we raced at The National Open we were approached by Tab Lawler about possibly driving The Pancho’s Racing Products #93 at Lowe’s”, explained Sam. “We talked throughout most of the evening and this seemed like an opportunity for success”.

Sam and The Plumbfast Racing Team headed to The Pancho’s Racing Products shop in New Oxford, PA following The National Open and a partnership was struck.

“We looked over and measured up the car and it turned out that they prepare a car very similar to how we do”, said Sam. “I had my guys take my seat out of the car that day and leave it with them”.

Since that time the team of Duane “Pancho” Lawler, Tab Lawler and Mike Hileman have been working tirelessly to prepare not only a brand new primary car, but a brand new back up car as well.

Sam also kept busy with some strong runs in a 360 in his home state of Texas but most impressive was his performance 2 weeks ago against The World of Outlaws at Lone Star Speedway, his home track where he tied his career best World of Outlaws finish with a 2nd place finish.

“We’re coming in to Lowe’s with a lot of momentum right now”, said Sam. “We’ve been really fast for the last few months and I really think we can keep it up and have an impressive performance for Pancho and the guys at Lowe’s”.

Sam’s weekend will begin at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Thursday night as they will take part in practice and qualifications. The following evening will be a complete racing program followed by Saturday night’s finale which will be broadcast live on SpeedTV at 8pm.

The combination will utilize a Don Ott Racing Engine, a J&J chassis, Weld Wheels, ButlerBuilt seats, Simpson Seat Belts, Hoosier Racing Tires and HRP wings.

Sam Hafertepe Jr. Thrills Local Crowd with 2nd Place Finish at Home Track

Daryl Turford

Sunnyvale, Texas-It wasn’t quite the storybook ending Sam Hafertepe Jr had been looking for but a 2nd place finish with the World of Outlaws (WoO) this past Saturday night at his family’s Lone Star Speedway had the Sunnyvale, Texas native smiling from ear to ear. Hafertepe chased Joey Saldana all feature long but had to settle for 2nd in front of the local crowd.

Sam started out the evening in the Lone Star Speedway #15h by setting the 11th fastest time in warm-ups.

“The car felt pretty good but I didn’t feel like we were making enough miles per hour”, explained Sam. “I had Kory (Miller) and Daryl (Turford) change gears and make some minor adjustments on the car”.

The gear change and adjustments seemed to have a positive effect on the #15h as Sam laid down the 2nd fastest time trial lap to that point. Unfortunately as time trials went on Sam was dropped to 6th fastest overall.

“We were pretty happy with our time trial run”, said Sam. “The track seemed to get faster as time trials went on but we out-timed some pretty good cars so we figured we were in a good situation”.

Sam lined up 3rd for his heat but hit a slick spot on the start and dropped to 5th going into turns 1 and 2. Hafertepe immediately went to the topside of the facility and was able to blast back past Tony Bruce Jr and into 4th. Sam spent the rest of the race chasing down Kraig Kinser but despite being able to close him down he was never able to make an attempt to take the position.

Sam’s strong time trial run resulted in Hafertepe being eligible for a spot in the Crane Cams Dash. As luck would have it Sam’s competitors left him with the precious #1 pill which put Hafertepe on the pole with Joey Saldana on the outside.

The Crane Cams Dash turned out to be a preview of the feature. Hafertepe got the jump when the green flag waved and led the field into turns 1 and 2. Saldana however drove his Kasey Kahne owned sprinter higher into the turn and used the momentum set up a slide job on Sam entering turns 3 and 4. Saldana completed the pass in turn 3 and then Sam attempted to drive back underneath him but didn’t quite have enough momentum to complete the pass. Saldana and Hafertepe set a blistering pace the rest of the way as Sam ended up settling for 2nd and an outside front row starting position for the feature event.

“Joey is just so tough on this type of race track”, said Sam following the Crane Cams Dash. “Our car is pretty good but we need it to be absolutely perfect to have any chance to beat Joey right now because he’s very, very fast tonight”.

The Plumbfast Racing Team went to work at trying to improve the performance of the Lone Star Speedway #15h and Sam rolled out for the feature and a chance to earn his first career WoO feature at his home track in front of his home fans.

Hafertepe again got the jump on Saldana as the duo streaked under the green flag. Sam entered on the bottom of the speedway and gradually slid up the track in an attempt to kill any pass attempt by Saldana. Saldana entered high and again tried to use his momentum to power past Sam.

“I made the right move on the start and did everything you are supposed to do to hold off Joey”, said Sam. “Unfortunately Joey is just so smart and has so much experience that he knows what to do in every situation. He made the right decision and that led to a drag race down the back straightaway”.

Saldana carried a little more momentum into turn 3 and slid up in front of Sam. Hafertepe countered the move by driving low across turn 3 into 4 but nearly met with disaster as the car slid sideways, killing his momentum and giving 3rd place running Steve Kinser a shot at Sam.

“Unfortunately the bottom hadn’t been blown off yet”, explained Sam. “As a result the car got away from me a bit but it was no big deal, I think it looked worse than it actually was”.

Kinser tried to take advantage of the situation and dove under Sam in turns 1 and 2 but Hafertepe was able to counter the move and blast back past Kinser into 2nd.

Saldana, Sam and Kinser set a blistering pace through the opening 22 of the 30 laps. Saldana was clearly the best car in open track but Hafertepe was able to make some moves and closed in on Joey in lapped traffic.

“I was taking some pretty crazy chances there in traffic”, said Sam. “I made some moves I normally wouldn’t make and had to do some pretty wild slide jobs but I wanted this one really bad and I wasn’t going to leave anything on the table”.

Hafertepe was within striking distance of Saldana when the race’s only caution flew on lap 22.
“That yellow killed us”, said Sam. “I didn’t have a chance to beat Joey in open track, if we were going to get him it was going to be in lapped traffic”.

Saldana made a good restart and Sam followed the WoO’s leading feature winner into turn 1. Hafertepe tried desperately to close down on Joey and mount a charge but couldn’t quite track him down and took a career best-tying 2nd place finish.

“The other time we finished 2nd it was to Joey”, said an elated Hafertepe. “It seemed like the same story all over again as we chased him throughout the feature but he again he was just flat out better than us tonight and I have no problem losing to Joey because he deserved to win this race”.

Despite coming so close to winning Sam was still thrilled.

“I don’t know how my guys could have had this car any better for the feature race”, said Sam. “Kory and Daryl busted their butts all week and there was a ton of pressure on our team to perform in this race so to come through like we did makes us really feel good. We are one of the youngest team’s out here but I really think we have one of the best teams anywhere”.

The race was also very important to the team as it was one of the few times that they were able to race in front of Sam’s parents this year.

“I kept telling them to give Joey the black flag”, said Sam’s Mom Lisa jokingly. “We are just so proud of Sam and the guys right now. We worked so hard to put this race on and to see Sammy do as well as he did just made this night so much more special to us”.

The race also meant a lot to Sam’s father.

“It meant so much to me to be able to greet Sam on the front straightaway”, said Sam Sr. “I know he wanted to win this race so much and he did such a great job trying to make it happen. I couldn’t ask for a better effort and I know he’s going to get one of these wins soon”.

Sam and the team will now finally have a chance to relax following one of the busiest schedules that any team has run this season. The team had planned to compete in The Short Track Nationals in Little Rock, Arkansas but rain eliminated those plans. As a result Sam’s next race will take place at Lowe’s Motor Speedway as he competes in The World Finals on November 5-7.

The Lone Star WoO race will be Sam’s last race with a 410 in the frame rails of the family owned car as Sam will be behind the wheel of the Pancho’s Racing Products #93 for The World Finals.

“I’m really excited about driving The Pancho’s Racing Products car”, said Sam. “Pancho, Tab and the guys there are first class and are giving me great equipment and I really think that we can put the car up front.”

The final night of The World Finals will be broadcast live on SpeedTV on Saturday evening at 8pm.
