Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (July 22, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. was on pace to capture another victory last weekend when it was pulled out from under him.

After charging from sixth to third place in his Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour heat race on Friday at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., Hafertepe Jr. led the opening seven laps of the main event before a caution jumbled everything.

“They took all the cones off and allowed the cars to run on the apron,” he said. “We were all racing out there and couldn’t see what we were doing because the dust was so bad. When the track changes like that all of a sudden you don’t expect it. It became quite dangerous. If a guy had spun out in turns three and four, we couldn’t see him and would have driven through him. It was a bad call on whoever’s part.”

Hafertepe Jr. fell to fourth place after the restart and despite low visibility, he maintained that position for the remainder of the race to earn his 11th top five of the season.

Frustration didn’t end that night. Hafertepe Jr. tackled Jackson Speedway in Jackson, Minn., on Saturday for a JSTS event.

“It was a bunch of confusion to be honest,” he said. “The track had called me two days before asking me to go down there. They said, ‘We’ll take care of you. It’s ASCS rules and all that.’ We drove through the night and got down there.”

Hafertepe Jr. charged from sixth to second place in his heat race.

“The car was really awesome,” he said. “I went to the scales and the guy says you can’t run that tire, just get it off there. We get in the pits and change it out. They take me to redraw and all of a sudden right before the B Main is going out the guy said, ‘I can’t let that go.’ He didn’t mention anything about it in the driver’s meeting.”

Hafertepe Jr., who had pulled the No. 3 in the redraw and thought he was starting on the inside of the second row for the main event, was told he was disqualified from his heat race and would be forced to start at the back of the B Main.

“The track was taking rubber,” he said. “Financially I wasn’t prepared to burn up four rear tires for running eighth or ninth in the feature.”

Hafertepe Jr. ended his weekend with a return to the Blazing Racing sprint car on Sunday at Huset’s Speedway for the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions event.

“They didn’t really have a driver for Sunday and we were getting my car ready,” he said. “I told them I’d drive it for the one night.”

After qualifying 15th quickest, finished fourth in his heat race and he was credited with a 12th-place finish in the main event.

Hafertepe Jr. is scheduled to compete this Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, in the 410ci class.

Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (June 24, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. returned to Victory Lane with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last Wednesday for the first time since 2011.

Hafertepe Jr. led all 30 laps and won by more than four seconds during the Bob Westphal Memorial Cup Speedweek visit to Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla.

“It’d been a while,” he said. “It felt pretty good to finally get one. We’ve been plenty fast.”

Hafertepe Jr. opened the night by charging from sixth to third place in his heat race. That earned him a trip into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 1 to start on the pole of the main event.

“Lawton worked out real good,” he said. “The car was about as good as we could have got it. We were driving away from them early. Then I found the rubber and just moved down. We had such a good car we could put it wherever we wanted to. I think a lot of guys were limited when the rubber came down. Our car was really nice.”

The victory was the third of the season for Hafertepe Jr., who ventured to Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla., on Thursday.

After finishing fifth in both his heat race and a B Main, Hafertepe Jr. was forced to use his first series provisional of the year to tag the back of the main event. He made it work to his advantage by rallying from 23rd to a 10th-place finish, which earned him the Hard Charger Award.

“The track never really widened out much,” he said. “We were just waiting for guys to get tight and we’d drive underneath them. We had the car where it had a lot of forward bite so we could drag race them off the corner. Not many guys were making a lot of passes.”

The momentum continued to roll into Friday’s event at Outlaw Motorsports Park in Wainwright, Okla. Hafertepe Jr. drove from fourth to second place in his heat race to advance into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 7 to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.

Hafertepe Jr. then methodically worked into a podium position and he was about to make a move for the runner-up spot with approximately eight laps remaining when that driver got into the wall exiting turn two.

“He swerved down the straightaway a couple of times,” Hafertepe Jr. said. “Once I picked the bottom he closed the bottom. He turned down to block. It got me completely sideways and I slid up to the fence and it ended our night there.”

With a severely damaged front end, Hafertepe Jr. was unable to restart the race and he was credited with a 16th-place result.

Tough luck continued to hamper him during the Speedweek finale at Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday, when Hafertepe Jr. maneuvered from fourth to second place in his heat race. Unfortunately, that one was position out of a redraw spot so Hafertepe Jr. started the main event ninth.

As the race began to wind down Hafertepe Jr. got stronger. He powered into the runner-up position and was on the bumper of the leader when there was a restart with seven laps remaining.

“We got a run on (Christopher) Bell on the restart and he chopped down,” he said. “I wanted to get real close to him so by the time we got to turn one maybe I could get a shot to get past him. I got down below him and he cut down at the last second. It pinched me into the tire. It broke the left front hub going down the back straightaway.”

After hitting the infield tire on the restart, Hafertepe Jr.’s left front tire broke off the car on the backstretch and his night ended early with a 15th-place finish.

“We had a shot to win that one,” he said. “We were plenty fast.”

Inside Line Promotions – WACO, Texas (June 9, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. took advantage of a rained out weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour to record his second ASCS regional triumph of the season.

After last Friday’s ASCS National Tour race at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tenn., was postponed because of weather, Hafertepe Jr. hauled an hour and a half to compete with the ASCS Gulf South Region at Heart O’Texas Speedway.

He kicked off the event by advancing from fifth to second place in his heat race, which earned enough points to make the feature redraw. Hafertepe Jr. pulled the No. 2 in the random draw to start the 25-lap main event on the outside of the front row.

“We pretty much led from green to checkered,” he said. “We had quite a few cautions in there. We were able to maintain on all the restarts.”

Despite moments of heavy traffic on the slick track, Hafertepe Jr. hustled around the bottom groove en route to the win, which was his second victory in the last six races this season.

“I’ve ran a lot of laps there,” he said. “When I first started racing sprint cars I ran there a lot. I know when it’s late in the night you need to hit your marks on the bottom.”

Following the win, Hafertepe Jr. and his team headed to I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., for Saturday’s Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour race.

“We blew a tire on our truck on the way down,” he said. “It tried to pull us right off the highway. We thought we were going to be late and then it rained out.”

After the bad luck en route to the race, the event was postponed because of rain.

Hafertepe Jr. is scheduled to compete this Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the start of the Bob Westphal Memorial Cup Speedweek with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. Hafertepe Jr. recorded his first win of the season at the half-mile track on May 17.

Inside Line Promotions – EAGLE, Neb. (June 2, 2014) – After testing for the past several weeks, Sam Hafertepe Jr. believes he has solved his tire issue.

“We’ve hit on something here lately,” he said. “Our testing is starting to pay off and we’re starting to get the car where we need it.”

That was evident throughout last weekend when Hafertepe Jr. and the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour competed at a pair of Midwest tracks beginning on Friday at Salina Speedway in Salina, Kan.

“We drew a decent heat and were pretty dominant,” he said.

Hafertepe Jr. won his heat race after starting third, which earned him enough points to advance into the feature redraw. Unfortunately, Hafertepe Jr. pulled the second-highest number – seven – in the random draw to line up on the inside of the fourth row in the main event.

“In the feature I felt like we kind of missed it,” he said. “We got up to pass for fourth about halfway through the race and I got stuck on the bottom for a little bit. The groove was predominantly on the top and I lost about three positions. We kind of maintained where we started and we really didn’t have the best race car.”

Hafertepe Jr. ended the night with a seventh-place result.

On Saturday, he headed to Eagle Raceway for the Hinchman Racewear Eagle Nationals. Hafertepe Jr. started on the inside of the third row in his heat race on the fast track.

“In the heat it was real hard to get going, especially if you started on the bottom,” he said. “The track was pretty fast so you really couldn’t pass many race cars.”

After picking up one position in his heat race, Hafertepe Jr. was the final driver to be locked into the main event. He started the 35-lap feature on the outside of the eighth row.

“For the feature we started messing with tires,” he said. “We made a few changes to the car. When they dropped the green flag it was a night and day difference. It made the car 10 times better. We picked up the forward bite we’ve been lacking.”

Hafertepe Jr. powered from 16th to eighth in the first handful of laps and he methodically picked up several positions throughout the remainder of the race to post a third-place result, which earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

“We needed a caution at the end and we didn’t have a caution after Lap 10,” he said. “We were pretty fast. We could run high or low. It didn’t matter where we went. After this weekend I think we hit the nail on the head of what we needed and where we needed it.”

Hafertepe Jr. will make his debut at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tenn., this Friday and he will tackle I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., on Saturday with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (May 21, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. scored his first victory of the season last Saturday at his home track.

Hafertepe Jr. led all 25 laps of the ASCS Lone Star Region and ASCS Sooner Region co-sanctioned feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway to pick up the triumph.

“We’ve been so good at a lot of places and probably should have won two or three by now,” he said. “It’s satisfying to get my first one, especially building my own motor. It felt like a pretty big achievement.”

Hafertepe Jr. kicked off the night by quickly charging forward in his heat race. He was up to third on the opening lap and finished with a runner-up result, which earned him enough points to advance into the feature redraw.

“In the heat race our car actually wasn’t as good as it could have been,” he said. “We were still a lot better than other guys, but it could have been better. We just rolled through there pretty good.”

Hafertepe Jr. pulled the No. 3 in the random redraw to start on the inside of the second row of the feature.

“The car was pretty much driving itself in the feature,” he said. “We had our car about as perfect as we could. It was on a rail. It made it real easy on me.”

Despite one close call in traffic, Hafertepe Jr. cruised to the win on the half-mile track that is located only a few minutes from his shop.

The weekend opened on Friday with the ASCS Lone Star Region at Boyd Raceway in Boyd, Texas. Hafertepe Jr. charged from sixth to win his heat race and advance into the feature redraw.

He pulled the No. 6 in the random redraw to start the main event on the outside of the third row.

“We got up to third right away and it laid rubber,” he said. “We were riding around there. On the last restart (Aaron) Reutzel got pretty tight in the rubber. When he pushed out of it, it allowed Jeff Swindell to go by him and we did as well. We made some runs at Jeff, but just couldn’t get it done.”

Hafertepe Jr. ended with a second-place finish on the rubber-down track.

He is scheduled to compete in an ASCS Gulf South Region tripleheader this weekend in Texas. The action starts on Friday at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige before the region makes its first-ever trip to Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad on Saturday. On Sunday, Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont hosts the finale.

Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (May 5, 2014) – Despite difficult pill draws, Sam Hafertepe Jr. captured a pair of top 10s during Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour action last weekend.

Hafertepe Jr. opened the weekend on Friday at Outlaw Motorsports Park in Wainwright, Okla., by starting on the outside of the second row of his heat race.

“We drew a good spot, but there were some tough cars in the heat race,” he said. “Once everybody got strung out it’s hard to pass people. We couldn’t get where we needed to get to.”

Hafertepe Jr. advanced from fourth to third place, which started him on the outside of the sixth row for the 25-lap main event.

“We actually jumped up to around eighth right away,” he said. “Our car felt better on the bottom at that stage of the race. Then I finally moved up to the top and ran down Danny Wood.”

After maneuvering to seventh place, Hafertepe Jr. lost a trio of positions in traffic during the closing laps.

“I made one wrong decision at one time and three guys went by me,” he said. “We kinda missed it right there.”

Hafertepe Jr. finished with a 10th-place result.

His team then traveled to Riverside International Speedway for Saturday’s Eagle Motorsports Rock ‘N Roll 50 Presented by MyRacePass.

“We drew another tough heat race,” said Hafertepe Jr., who started eighth in a heat race that included three other full-time ASCS National Tour drivers as well as a former national champion.

“I was able to get by Jason Johnson and Tony Bruce Jr. on the first lap. I got past another local guy at the end. Our car was really good and we were able to move around quite a bit.”

After rallying from eighth to fourth place, Hafertepe Jr. was ninth in overall points and he missed the feature redraw by one spot. That started him on the inside of the fifth row for the 50-lap feature.

“It felt really good at the beginning,” he said. “As the race progressed our car went away on us. We weren’t real good at the end. We kinda just maintained. There were about four of us battling for fourth right there at the end. The car just kinda fell off at the end.”

Hafertepe Jr. ended with a sixth-place result.

He enters this Thursday’s McCarthy Auto Group KC Klassic at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., ranked fourth in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings – only five points out of third place.

Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (April 22, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. is an optimist and it shows following the Texas Outlaw Nationals at his home track.

Hafertepe Jr. had one of the fastest cars – if not the fastest – during the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series doubleheader last weekend at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, which is only a few minutes from Hafertepe Jr.’s shop. Unfortunately, an incident on the opening lap of the feature both nights hampered his results.

“We’ve always been good there because we’ve ran a lot of laps around that place,” he said. “It was successful to go out there having not raced with those guys in a while to be the fastest. At the same rate when you have a chance to contend for the win both nights and we never even made a lap, that is disappointing. I try to look at the bright side on that. You always have to keep your head up in this sport.”

Hafertepe Jr. opened the event last Friday by qualifying 10th quickest. He then powered to the heat race victory from the pole position to lock himself into the dash, which he started third.

“We had the car really good,” he said. “We walked off from them in the heat race and never really got challenged. I felt really, really good. In the dash we were good as well. I just thought we were getting better and better.”

After finishing second in the dash, Hafertepe Jr. started the 25-lap feature on the outside of the front row.

“On the start of the feature we had a bleeder going down in the right rear tire,” he said. “The bleeder has a plastic insert and that broke. It’s just a parts failure.”

After getting a good jump on the opening start, the yellow flag was waved because a driver spun out. On the complete restart, Hafertepe Jr.’s tire began to deflate and he slowed in turns three and four to bring out the caution. His team replaced the tire and Hafertepe Jr. returned to tag the field.

“We had the car set up pretty tight for being out front,” he said. “Back in traffic we were really bad. If we were set up to run back there we could have passed more cars.”

Hafertepe Jr. rallied from last to place 16th.

He continued to showcase speed during the finale on Saturday, which culminated with the $20,000-to-win Ted Johnson Memorial.

Hafertepe Jr. qualified third quickest and then charged from fourth place to win his heat race. After advancing from fourth to third place in the dash, Hafertepe Jr. started the main event on the inside of the second row.

“When we got out for the feature I made my warm-up lap and I felt like my car was really, really nice,” he said. “When I went through turns one and two to test the top, I figured the top would be the place to be. I felt like ‘Man, we’re going to have a shot to win this.’ Coming off turn two the motor went sour on us. It dropped a valve on it. A little bit of bad luck, but that’s part of it.”

Hafertepe Jr. pulled to the pits on the opening lap with the engine issue and he was credited with a 24th-place finish.

He will return to action with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series this Friday at Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Okla. Hafertepe Jr. qualified second quickest and finished seventh in the main event there last year.

“We’ve got something that works pretty well there,” he said. “We’ll just go in there with the same mindset we went in with this weekend. I feel like we’re going to be pretty competitive.”

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 15, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. posted his third consecutive top five last Saturday at I-30 Speedway.

Hafertepe Jr. charged from 16th to a fifth-place result during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at the bullring, which keeps him in third place in the championship standings – only 12 points out of the lead.

“We had a really good car,” he said. “It showed in the feature. The more and more laps you give a guy with a good car, he’s going to take advantage.”

The night didn’t begin as well as it ended as Hafertepe Jr. drew a high pill, which started him on the outside of the fourth row of his heat race.

“We drew a pretty tough heat race and we drew in the back of a heat race,” he said. “We had guys like Sean McClelland, Dustin Morgan, Matt Covington and Tim Crawley, and the track was right around the bottom.”

Hafertepe Jr. rallied from eighth to fifth place, which earned him enough points to advance directly into the main event. He started 16th in the 30-lap feature.

“The track got pretty dry in the feature,” he said. “Most guys were putting around the bottom. We were able to move around a bit and run the middle for the most part of the race.”

Hafertepe Jr. maneuvered through the field to score his fourth top five of the season.

He is scheduled to compete this Friday and Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the $20,000-to-win Texas Outlaw Nationals Presented by American Racing Custom Wheels with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.
