Hafertepe Jr. Happy to Return To Devil's Bowl Speedway for Winter Nationals
Inside Line Promotions - ROSSBURG, Ohio (Oct. 14, 2013) - Sam Hafertepe Jr. is looking forward to returning to his stomping grounds this weekend for the 40 th annual Winter Nationals.
Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, which is approximately a 10-minute drive from his home, hosts the premier Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader on Friday and Saturday.
"I kinda grew up racing there a little bit," he said. "We always run really well there. We're always in the hunt. Anything less than a win is not acceptable this weekend."
In his only race this season at the fast track, Hafertepe Jr. claimed both his heat race and the feature on Aug. 24 during the ASCS Gulf South vs. ASCS Lone Star regional showdown. The competition will be tougher this weekend.
"Get a decent draw in the heat race and get some passing points and give yourself a chance for the A Main," he said of his goal. "We should be able to do fairly well."
Hafertepe Jr. is coming off a disappointing finish last Saturday during the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions event at Eldora Speedway.
After qualifying fourth quickest, Hafertepe Jr. placed sixth in his heat race to narrowly miss a transfer to the feature - which would have also put him in the dash. He was forced to compete in the B Main, which he placed second to earn a transfer to the main event.
"We got through the B Main and did some things with the car," he said. "We had the car going pretty good in the feature. Then a car hit the fence in turn one and I got caught up in all that. I had nowhere to go and got into some guys checking up. I hopped the right rear tire and up over we went."
Hafertepe Jr. was caught up in the early melee and was credited with a 23rd-place result after flipping.
